It began more than eighty-five years ago when local businesses rallied for an airport to be built in Boston. Built in the early 1920s Boston Airport was the birthplace of the term “airport”. It was originally used mainly by the Massachusetts Air Guard and the Army Air Corp. Ownership was transferred from the US Army to the Massachusetts Legislature in 1928. Now known as Boston Logan International Airport, it ranks 20th in passenger volume nationwide. It boosts the regional economy of New England by about $7 billion a year. They offer service from over fifty air carriers to more than seventy domestic and thirty international destinations.

Funded by construction projects, Boston Logan International Airport is home to a public art program that displays numerous artworks throughout the terminals and parking garage. Logan International Airport has their own fire and police services. Massport Fire Rescue not only serves the airport, but the surrounding communities as well. They have a modern training facility that trains individuals for fire departments all over the country. CPR and First Aid training is available to all airport employees. Policing is done by Troop F of the Massachusetts State Police located at the airport.

Banking service is offered as well as public Internet access. They even have a shoe shine service, beauty salon and spa. There are presently eight car rental companies operating out of Boston Logan International Airport. They are Avis, Dollar, Enterprise, Thrifty, Alamo, Budget, Hertz and National. Each company offers shuttle bus rides to and from the terminal and car rental facility free of charge.
