If you ever travel to Malta you will likely frequent use Malta’s only airport. Malta Airport is used for a variety of purposes in addition to hosting destination airlines like Air Malta, EgyptAir and Holiday Ailrines. It’s used as the location for the Malta Air show that showcases everything from civil planes to military aircraft from all across Europe.
The airport is close to Malta’s capital city, Valletta. In fact, it’s only about eight kilometers away. People from the area refer to the airport as either the Luqa Airport or the Valletta Airport but its official name is the Malta International Airport. The airport was completely renovated back in 1992 to better service its great variety of customers in the Maltese Archiplago area. The Malta Airport has quite a history. It was the site of a terrible plane-hijacking in 1985 when hijackers forced the plane to land resulting in over sixty passenger deaths. Additional personnel and crew were also lost. This incident is considered one of the worst in history. Since then, security has been beefed up and the airport is known to be very safe and travelers come and go with peace of mind.
There are many transportation options in Malta airport. There is a park and ride service; there is Gozo-airport shuttle bus, public busses and a taxi depot outside the airport. It is also possible to rent a car from the airport, Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar, National, Sixt and Thrifty all have counters in the airport.
