There are two airports with the name Southampton Airport. One is located in Ontario, Canada and that one is a relatively small airport, with most passengers flying out of the Pearson Airport. The other airport is located in the United Kingdom. Its past is steeped in history. Along with being the starting point for the famous Spitfire, it is rumored to have been built on the site of an ancient villa, although the accuracy of that statement can’t be confirmed.
On the site of the existing airport, hangars were built during the First World War. Then the site was used as a Russian refugee camp. Temporary housing was built and the existing hangers were turned into living facilities. In the 30s the site was taken over by the Southampton Corporation. They decided to build the Southampton Airport. In addition, a test flight facility was built and even a factory near the runway, but these were eventually closed down and now it’s just the site of an airport.
Today the Southampton Airport is just one of several busy airports in England, with nearly two million travelers using its facilities each year. It services over forty various destinations in Europe. As a point of interest, the airport allows trainers to conduct flying lessons out of its facilities. It is a busy airport and features the usual array of shops and stands that are typically expected in larger airports. Customer service and information stations are located throughout the facilities for customer assistance.
Ground transportation is good in Southampton airport. There are many car hire facilities in the airport, Avis, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, National and Alamo all operate from the airport. There is also the National rail service, and National Express coaches that provide transport to and from the airport.
