Tenerife South Airport in the Canary Islands has several well known car hire companies located in the central hall. The airport provides a good shopping area with several shops selling gifts and souvenirs, local produce, clothes and sweets as well as a duty free shop. The pharmacy, medical centre and chapel are open around the clock. There are also cash machines, a bank, post office and several bars and cafes providing hot and cold meals, drinks and snacks such as Cafe Ritazza and Ibense Bornay. There is a VIP lounge located on the second floor, where services include a courtesy bar, TV and newspapers. There are two lounges available for conferences and meetings
The minimum age to rent a car is 21. Rental prices in the Canary Islands are considerably lower than on the mainland. Prices include collision damage waiver, theft protection, third party liability, VAT, unlimited mileage and airport fees. As well as mid-range cars, many car hire companies now offer more extravagant models, such as top of the range sports cars. There is a good choice of car hire companies operating at Tenerife Airport, each offering an extensive range of vehicles to suit all budgets and family sizes. Pre-booking not only means time saved filling in forms, but also often results in a better deal, particularly on internet bookings. On pick up of your vehicle you will require a full British licence and photo ID as well as credit/debit card.
Before driving your hire car away check for any scratches, dents and damages to the exterior and make sure that they are logged by the car hire company. In addition, check that there are two red emergency triangles in the boot, a box of spare bulbs, all insurance and ownership papers are in the glove compartment, and in case of accident there is a claim form in the car. These items are all required by law.
Tenerife’s roads are circuitous, hilly and winding, but generally fairly quiet, making driving a pleasure. When driving the country roads, it is necessary to drive carefully and avoid speeds as there are plenty of hairpin bends to negotiate. Driving in Tenerife can be chaotic, to say the least. Vehicles drive on the right hand side. Seat belts are compulsory and not wearing one can incur a €90 fine. Children under the age of 12 are not allowed to sit in the front passenger seat. Use of mobile phones while driving is illegal, despite the probability that you will see many drivers flouting the law; the Guardia Civil hand out fines of €60 for this common offence, however hands free sets are permitted. Driving licences must be carried at all times while driving. Failure to produce one on request may incur a fine of €60. Blood alcohol limit is 0.08, with random checks and on the spot fines. If you are stopped by the police for any reason you will be asked to produce your passport, driving licence and vehicle documents. Since May 31st 2008 it is an offence to drive without a driving licence, or one that has been suspended or has run out of points, punishable by 3-6 months in prison, or a 12-24 month ban or 31-90 days community service.
Tinerfenos (people living on Tenerife) tend to park wherever there is a space, irrespective of its proximity to a pedestrian crossing, and you may find your car hemmed in by an elusive driver who has decided to double park across your parking space. It is the law that you leave a space of at least 30cm (1 foot) between you and the next vehicle when parking. Where possible, it is best to park in underground parking areas, where your car will be kept cool. Sunday outings are popular with Tinerfenos and hence Sunday driving can be a slow and congested process. Look out for the huge trucks which transport locally produced fruit and vegetables across the island. Getting stuck behind one may mean you remain in second gear for some time, although the truck drivers are only too willing to pull over onto the hard shoulder in order to allow you to overtake. Travelling on the TF1 and TF5 autopistas saves time, but you will notice that most vehicles avoid the extra inside lane which was added to the old road, now the middle lane, resulting in a mass of cars in the middle with an almost empty inside lane. The speed limit on the autopista is 120Km. Stick to the speed limit wherever you drive as radar traps are extremely common. If you have a flat tyre and intend to change the tyre yourself, you must place one red triangle 100 metres behind of the car and another 100 metres behind it but on the opposite side of the road.
