Sanford Airport is situated in Sanford Florida, 18 miles north east of Orlando, It has four runways and two terminals. Terminal A is for international flights; facilities include the Palm Lounge with youth entertainment centre, children’s play area, internet access and quiet reading room with magazines. There is also an arcade room to entertain the children. There are shopping facilities and Food Court providing snacks as well as a Budweiser Tap Room. Terminal B is for domestic flights; facilities include an American Grill and Cafe Ritazza for hot and cold meals and snacks as well as Blue Sky Spirits and Blue Sky Express, serving alcoholic and soft drinks.

There is a good choice of car hire companies operating at Sanford Airport, each offering an extensive range of vehicles to suit all budgets and family size. Pre-booking not only means time saved filling in forms, but also often results in a better deal. On pick up you will require a full British licence and photo ID as well as credit/debit card.

When hiring a car in the US it is generally the case that insurance will not be included. In this case the renter must purchase CDW (Collision Damage Waiver)/ LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) and Supplementary Liability Insurance. This can be bought at the car rental counter at a cost of between $20 and $30 a day. There may also be Excess on CDW and Theft, which the renter can choose to reduce to Zero at the desk. Some companies offer a ‘zero excess’ policy. If the vehicle is lost, stolen or damaged the renter may be liable to an excess charge. Most rental companies charge between £100 and £150 to replace lost vehicle keys. Some rental companies allow one extra driver free of charge, while others do not. Child and booster seats are charged on a daily fee. The renter must have a credit card or debit card at the time of hiring a vehicle, so that an imprint can be taken to cover excess such as petrol/ diesel, fire, theft or damage. Some hire companies charge extra as a deposit at the desk, refundable on return of the vehicle undamaged. It is therefore essential that the renter inspects the vehicle for defects, points them out to the company and ensures that they log the information at the time of hire. In the case of an accident, the renter must obtain a local police report and complete the relevant accident forms. The hire company will refund the excess on receipt of the documentation.

Hire cars vary between hire companies, but generally boot space is smaller in American cars than their UK equivalent. A family of 2 adults and 2 children with luggage for 2 weeks will require a mid-size car. Car categories include Economy with 14 ft of boot space, Compact with 14.5 ft of boot space, Standard with 15 ft of boot space, Mid Size with 16 ft of boot space and Full Size with 17 ft of boot space. All vehicles use unleaded patrol and petrol is measured in US gallons which are slightly smaller than UK gallons. Some vehicles have foot pedal operated handbrakes, which operate by pressing once to hold the brake and pressed again to release. All cars have air conditioning and are automatic, often with the shift lever positioned on the steering column.

Before driving off, it is advisable to familiarise yourself with the Florida State Drivers Handbook, which includes emergency contact information and a section specifically for non UK citizens. Although the law states who has the right of way on Florida roads, it is generally ignored resulting in a free-for-all. Stop signs mean you must yield the right of way to all other traffic and pedestrians. You may move forward when the road is clear. At four-way stops the first vehicle to stop moves forward first. Where two vehicles arrive at the intersection at the same time, right of way is given to the vehicle on the right. At open intersections without stop signs, you yield right of way if entering or crossing from a secondary road, if a vehicle is on the intersection, and when making a left turn and a vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction. At most roundabouts it is not necessary to stop, as a constant flow of slow moving traffic moves continuously.

Always drive on the right side of a two-lane highway unless overtaking. Where there are four lanes, the left lanes are often reserved for car pool traffic, indicated by a diamond sign in the median. At expressway entrances there are three basic parts, the entrance ramp, acceleration lane and merging area. When parking, always park on the right hand side of the road, unless you are on a one-way street. Parking is not permitted on crosswalks, sidewalks, by curbs painted yellow, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, within 20 feet of an intersection, within 50 feet of a railway crossing, within 30 feet of a rural mail box on a state highway between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm, within 30 feet of a flashing signal, stop sign or traffic signal. At night parking lights must be used when parking on a road or shoulder outside towns and cities.
