Hiring a Car at Nice Airport

Choosing the Right Kind of Car and Booking in Advance
Your holiday destination is to be Nice and you want to hire a car. A wonderful holiday awaits you, and forward planning will help things run smoothly. Decide in advance whether you will need a luxury car or whether a small car will be sufficient for your needs. You will of course base your decision on the number of passengers and the amount of luggage they will be taking with them. All hire cars will be serviced and will be clean and fully checked. They are usually fairly new, most being under 6 months old. You will probably be required to return your vehicle with a full tank which is how it will be supplied to you.
For peace of mind, book as far ahead as you possibly can. You do not want to arrive at the airport and then have to wait while organising a vehicle. If booking and paying for your vehicle over the internet, it is a good idea to print off the paperwork which you should keep in a folder in your hand luggage. You will be given a booking reference number which needs to be noted down. In the event of your flight being delayed, your car hire company will keep your vehicle for you as they will have been previously informed by you of your flight number. Your chosen car hire company will provide you with a very close match to the vehicle you order if by some chance, your particular request cannot be met.

Information and Documentation Needed
Your passport and UK driver’s licence will need to be in your possession at all times. You should also carry a valid credit card.

Driving in France
The first thing to remember is: Drive on the right! Take great care when setting off from a service station or restaurant on the left-hand side of the road. Do not lose concentration when pulling out as this is the time when most accidents happen. A very simple tip is to put a sticker on your dashboard with the words “KEEP RIGHT” on it.
It is a good idea to familiarise yourself with French road signs which differ from those of the UK. You may have to give priority to traffic coming from the right, especially on small roads or in built-up areas. There are road signs to indicate this, and you need to be aware of what they look like!
France has an excellent motorway system. Most motorways have tolls but it is usually worthwhile to pay these as distances can be great. It can be worthwhile pulling off the motorway and driving a kilometre or so to find one of the numerous hypermarkets which sell petrol. Doing this can mean a saving of around 10% on the price of petrol.
In the event of an accident or a breakdown, contact your rental company for authorisation for repairs to the vehicle or for a replacement vehicle. Write down as many details as you can about the accident. Exchange contact details with other persons involved. Make a simple drawing of the accident and take photographs if you can. Find any witnesses and alert the police in the same way as you would in the UK.
If you are unfortunate enough to run out of petrol, stop on the hard shoulder. Call 112 for help or walk to the nearest telephone (there is one every 2 kilometres). Petrol will be brought to you but of course the price will be higher than normal.
France is twice the size of the UK and with roughly the same population. Therefore driving in France can be very pleasurable. Away from the main cities there are roads with very little traffic. There are quirky little towns and villages just waiting to be explored in all the regions of France. In fact, a French motoring holiday is one that you may well wish to repeat.

General Facilities at Nice Airport
There are 2 terminals at the airport, both with ATMs, bureaux de change and banks. There is a post office, pharmacy and 24-hour medical centre at Terminal 1. Over 40 shops, including duty-free, fashion, jewellery, perfume and regional foodstuffs offer a wide range of goods. There is a business centre on the 2nd floor of Terminal 1 as well as meeting rooms and conference facilities. At Terminal 2 are private rooms for business use. Information desks are situated at both terminals.
Nice Airport is 7 kilometres from the city centre and is the gateway to the Mediterranean coast of France. More than 9 million passengers use this airport annually. The airport is fairly large yet friendly and pleasant with beautiful views from the terminals.
