Hiring a Car at Faro Airport
There are around nine different companies offering car hire at Faro Airport in Portugal. They all offer a wide range of vehicles. You can choose from a small two-door car, a 5-door hatchback, an estate or luxury vehicle; whatever suits your needs and your budget. Special offers are often available so always ask.

Booking in advance
Booking in advance is preferable from the point of view of your peace of mind. The internet is an easy way to book in advance. Make sure you use a secure site and print off all paperwork. You can, if you prefer, make a telephone booking and pay using a credit card. Book ahead as far as you can. This way you can be fairly sure of getting just the right make and model of vehicle for your needs. You will be given a booking number which you need to keep to hand. In the event of your flight being delayed, the car hire company will be aware of this as you will have given them your flight number.

Finding Car Hire Desks at Faro
Car hire firms are situated in the public area of the arrivals hall. One thing to bear in mind is that Faro is a small airport and therefore some car hire companies will arrange for their representatives to meet you in the airport. They will then finalise paperwork with you and your hire car will be waiting in the nearby car park. Other companies at Faro use buses to transfer you to and from their depots outside the airport.

General Facilities at Faro Airport
Faro International Airport is 7 kilometres west of the small city of Faro in Portugal. This airport handles a large number of flights from the UK as well as many flights from most other European countries. In the arrival hall, help desks with obliging staff are present. Here you can get information on car hire and also Algarve tourist information. There are comfortable seating areas downstairs and you will find coffee shops in the upstairs area. There are also duty-free shops for shopping.

Choosing the right kind of car
Before you depart for Faro, it is a good idea to decide in advance what size and model of car you will require. Depending on the number of passengers and the size of the luggage will determine whether you will go for a 5-door car or a smaller two-door. Whatever size or type of car you decide upon, it will be serviced, fully checked and supplied with a full tank of petrol. Bear in mind that you will need to return the car with a full tank.

Information and Documentation Needed
Two forms of identification will be required when taking control of your hire car: your passport (photo ID) and your UK driver’s licence. You will also need a valid credit card.

Driving in Portugal
Always carry your driving licence and vehicle registration document together with insurance certificate. Carry your passport with you at all times.
When driving with children in the car, you must bear certain things in mind. Children shorter than 1.5m and aged up to 12 must be restrained in the vehicle. Children are allowed in the front seat with restraint and airbags off. If there are no seat belts in back seats, children under 3 are not allowed.
Do not drink and drive. Portuguese laws are very strict and can even lead to imprisonment. Police vehicles carry credit/debit card machines and most fines are on the spot. Failure to pay may result in document apprehension and possibly the vehicle as well!
Unleaded petrol (all grades), diesel and LPG are available in Portugal. All grades of unleaded petrol, diesel and LPG are available as well as lead substitute additive.
Carrying fuel in cans is not permitted. Credit and debit cards are accepted widely, but often do not work at automatic pumps. Remember that in Portugal, as in Spain, lunchtime can be from noon to 3pm so it is advisable to keep your tank full as, in rural areas during these hours, petrol stations may be closed.
Use dipped headlights in poor visibility.
If you hold a full UK licence, the minimum driving age is 18.
It is compulsory to carry visibility vests and warning triangles.
Should you break down or have an accident, exchange contact details with the other parties. Take photographs and make a sketch. Find witnesses and alert the police. Contact your rental company immediately. In other words, do everything in the same way as you would if at home. Remember to carry the phone number of the rental company on your mobile phone.
