Peter Richards, of Memphis, Tennessee recently rented a car from Alamo using the online discount travel service priceline.com. When Mr. Richards and his client arrived at the rental location and presented the quote from Priceline he was told that they would not be able to honor the price. Sure, Richards could rent a car from the airport location of Alamo but he would have to pay a higher price and use his own credit card for the purchase.

According to Richards the problem was not that his quote wasn’t valid or that the credit card used to secure the reservation had been declined. The problem stems from a difference in the policies of each company. While one company requires the purchaser to present a credit card the other company requires the credit card of the person who will be driving the car. This presented a problem because Richards’ boss was the one who made the reservations via Priceline.com. In the end Mr. Richards was forced to use his own credit card and his employer causing both he and his employer to be charged for the rental.

The issue is yet to be resolved between Priceline and Alamo and Mr. Richards. Rather than issuing either party a refund the two companies have blamed each other on the problem and both refuse to shell out the money leaving Richards wondering if he is the only person to have run into this problem. One thing Richards does know is that it’s better to go directly to the source when renting a vehicle rather than going through a third party that might not be willing to work out a refund.
