Millions of travelers all around the world use online booking sites to plan their vacations. These convenient services provide travelers with one stop shopping for all their needs. With just a few clicks of the mouse a flight, rental car, and a motel can be booked. Travelers no longer have to worry about booking each individual item separately which for the busy traveler cuts down on a lot of stress.

Unfortunately, many cities in America are not happy with these online booking agencies. According to information released over the weekend from the city of Atlanta, online booking agencies are getting the tax money that the individual establishments should be getting. In a lawsuit the city of Atlanta is suing 17 of the top online booking sites including the popular Orbitz.com, Priceline.com., and Hotels.com for the tax money that rightly belongs to the hotels however the online booking sites aren’t giving up without a fight.

This case is just one of many that are going on throughout the United States as more and more establishments are realizing that they are losing valuable tax money. The problem stems from the fact that online vendors such as Expedia.com and Travelocity.com purchase a number of rooms from the motels at wholesale rates. The amount of tax charged is based on the reduced wholesale rate and not on the actual cost of the room therefore leaving the individual hotels to hand over more to the government than what they are actually receiving from taxes.
