For many years Lonely Planet has produced Lonely Planet Travel Guides. These guides provide in depth travel guides and practical tips for visiting nearly every country in the world. In an effort to add to their empire BBC, who owns a majority of Lonely Planet will begin publishing a magazine in the UK. Each issue will contain over 170 pages of the best trips for travel and the hottest destinations in the UK. The company plans to print 60,000 magazines each month which will retail for under 6 Pounds.

This isn’t Lonely Planet’s first venture into publishing a monthly magazine. In September 2007 Lonely Plant Travel Guides began a monthly publication in Spain. The success of the magazine in Spain prompted the company to look into other area with high magazine subscription rates. While the company plans to follow the UK launch with similar programs in other countries there is no plan as of yet to include the United States or Central America in the program.

It will be interesting to find what the competition thinks of this plan. Following the acquisition of Lonely Planet the BBC was challenged by Tony Elliott the founder of Time Out Magazine. Elliot whose publications include over 20 magazines believes that the BBC has gone beyond their boundaries by moving into the travel market. Only time will tell but based on the success of Lonely Planet Magazine in Spain Elliott may have more competition that he bargained for.
