The Hilton New York, along with its nearly 2,000 rooms, is going a long way toward becoming a truly green hotel. The hotel’s commitment to clean, efficient energy is demonstrated by their installation of a PureCell Model 200 power unit. The unit designed and installed by United Technologies Corporation based in Connecticut, will provide a large portion of the hotel’s power. The UTC fuel cell is designed to reduce Hilton New York’s carbon footprint by nearly 800 tons each year. Hilton Hotels has made a commitment to the public and to its shareholders to greatly decrease emissions from its hotels worldwide.

The power unit that the hotel is installing will provide an uninterrupted power supply for the hotel, so in case of a black or brown-out the hotel will still have power. In a statement released to the press, George Neeson, VP of Engineering & Housekeeping, said that, “With a global vision to be the first choice of the world’s travelers, we at Hilton Hotels Corporation are concentrating on eco-friendly initiatives that our Hilton Family of Hotels can adopt to help improve and sustain the environment for future generations of travelers. The fuel cell at the Hilton New York is one of the more significant ways we can have an impact on energy consumption in one of the largest cities in the world.”

More than half of the energy produced by a power plant is lose as waste heat. The power cell being installed by the Hilton in NYC is far more efficient. The PureCell system maintains an efficiency level of nearly 90 percent. When coupled with the hotel chain’s other environmentally-friendly measures, Hilton promises to have a very bright green future ahead.
