Two of Canada’s top airlines are lowering their fees and surcharges to keep pace with the recent decrease in jet fuel prices. Air Canada will be eliminating their second bag fee of 25 dollars for North American flights and, along with WestJet, will be working its fuel surcharges into its advertised ticket prices. Port Airlines, a smaller carrier, has also announced its intentions to eliminate their fuel surcharge as a separate fee. Although the current fuel prices have been described as, “…erratic…” by the airlines, and are still above their normal levels, the decrease in global fuel prices has allowed the airlines to reinstate their previous baggage policies, according to an Air Canada spokesman.
The new policies on fueld surcharges will go into effect immediately, and will range from 20 to 60 dollars on some flights. The baggage fees, however, will be eliminated beginning September 23. An Air Canada spokesman has said that the company will be the first to take such action, and Mel Fruitman, VP of the Consumers’ Association of Canada, has said that, “It’s the right thing to do.” According to Fruitman, “All of those charges could be built-in – and should be built-in – to the price. That is a much more honest way to advertise.”
Air Canada has also stated that it will be simplifying its fees for overweight or oversized luggage pieces by charging a flat $75 fee for North American flights. For international flights, the fee will be set at $100, and will begin on October 14.
