With the tentacles of the European high-speed rail network and budget air carriers spreading to more and more locations, a whole new range of relatively undiscovered destinations are now within easy reach… we look at some of the hippest places to be right now.
First up is the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, a massive and beautiful city of monasteries, open-air parks and stunning architecture. Often compared to Budapest or Prague the lack of tourist masses make it just as appealing. Budget airline Wizz Air is now offering flights from most European countries to what could be the continent’s most exciting location, for now.
High speed rail has placed the Spanish town of Segovia squarely on the map, meaning simple access to 2,000 year old Roman aqueducts and cobblestone streets. Pork lovers will also be pleased to know that this is the suckling pig capital of the country. France’s high-speed rail links have also meant that Metz, just 80 minutes from Paris, is also a new trendy town, resplendent with art galleries including the soon to relocated Pompidou Centre. Twilight showcases the best of the cities eateries and views in this fast developing area. The fortified ruins that surround the island hint at a colourful past in what could just be the most picturesque city in the region.
The largest northern Greek city, Thessaloniki, has benefited from greater air links allowing contemporary culture off the normal Athens and Islands trail. The self-proclaimed cultural capital teems with musicians and writers, many stemming from the town’s universities. Accordingly, the bar and cafe scene is excellent.
Where else? Check out the beaches of Montenegro or mountains in Slovakia or for history buffs try Valletta in Malta, which is fast shedding its reputation as a grey dollar beach resort.
