The British Airports Authority says that it will now appeal against the decision made by the Competition Commission to sell three of its airports. The British Airports Authority had said that they were only going to appeal if the selling of the airports did not seem favorable. After getting many bids that were well below what they wanted, they have chosen to appeal against the decision.
The airport company, which is a subsidiary of Spanish conglomerate Ferrovial, said that the report from the Competition Commission was affected by “apparent bias.” They went on to say that this is due to the links between members of the Competition Commission panel and organization interested in buying the airports.
Many say that this is understood to refer to a member of the Competition Commission that was also connected directly with one of the groups bidding on Gatwick Airport. The British Airports Authority says that they are appealing on the grounds that the Competition Commission failed to take into account the adverse financial impact of having the British Airports Authority sell three airports within two years in the current economic circumstances.
The Stansted Airline Consultative Committee (also known as the ACC) criticized the appeal by the British Airports Authority, saying that it was a baseless appeal that is bad for, not only passengers, but the economy. The British Airports Authority will have its appeal heard before the Competition Appeal Tribunal. More details about the appeal are set to be released in a few days when more information has been given out about the appeal itself.
