It is now said that British Airways has called in the help of the ACAS after failing to reach an agreement with unions over pay cuts and job losses. Bringing in the ACAS is a major attempt on British Airways’ side to avoid a summer strike. This announcement came just a few days ago after the two sides were unable to reach an agreement.
More talks with the union were expected to take place a few days ago, but the union claims that the British Airways management failed to show up at all. British Airways said in a statement that it has not been possible for the two sides to reach an agreement, and they seem to be walking in circles. Both sides have not been able to reach deals on pay and productivity discussions by the time the deadline of June 30 rolled around.
British Airways went on to say, because of this fact, they have now asked the ACAS to join in on the meetings. Right now, unions have offered to agree to cost cutting measures on a temporary basis. This means until the airline gets back on its feet. However, British Airways said that it wants to make these new changes permanent.
If this huge dispute is not settled, then it could lead to a big ballot for industrial action, which would threaten disruption during the peak summer period for travel. This is something that British Airways cannot afford to miss out on. Many issues remain unsolved and both sides are fighting tooth and nail to get what they want.
