Just following the decision that led to a strike ballot for British Airways’ cabin crew, Unite union is now holding more talks with British Airways’ management team. However, this time the talks are about the check in and customer service staff.

The officials from Unite and GMB unions will meet with airline management to discuss the carrier’s planned job losses and cost cuts. The last set of talks about check in staff ended without any kind of agreement being reached. These talks were held over the summer. However, the current talks are an attempt to get these talks back on track.

The union went on to say that British Airways wants to cut almost 10 percent of its so called “A scales staff.” This will amount to about 1,000 jobs overall. British Airways chief executive, Willie Walsh, said that new meeting talks continue after a cooling off period from the last set of talks.

Steve Turner, the national officer for Unite union, said that there are some fears that British Airways’ airport staff would be outsourced. On top of this, there are also fears that there will be a roster change and a new low rate of pay for new employees. He went on to also say that British Airways was looking to cut about 1,250 jobs among that section of its workforce. This included about 800 people from Heathrow alone.

More talks are sure to come in the coming weeks between the unions and British Airways. Willie Walsh has already claimed that the airline is in a fight for survival. He also claims that thees cuts are very necessary for the airline to turn a profit.
