The latest passenger review survey from has been released and it’s all good news for old-timer Cunard and relative newcomer Thomson Cruises. Cunard was voted by passengers as their favourite cruise line while Thomson took home honours in entertainment, service and food – a first for the Tui Travel Group subsidiary.

The quarterly survey is based on a star-rating system and involved 17,000 reviews from passengers that have been posted on’s website over the past year. All of the reviews are independent of travel agencies and ask readers to rate their experience in a range of categories.

Cunard held off strong competition from Thomson Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Ocean Village to win top cruise company. The group also scooped the best ship gong with the Queen Mary 2, up seven places from last survey, heading off Celebrity Equinox and Thomson Spirit. The Queen Mary 2 also won the award for best accommodation from MSC Fantasia and Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas.

Thomson Cruises managed top spot in three categories, the first time the company has finished atop the passenger surveys. Thomson Cruises beat off traditional favourite Independence of the Seas from Royal Caribbean to take first and second places in the entertainment section for Thomson Spirit and Thomson Destiny respectively. The Thomson Celebration was awarded best service leading a clean-sweep in that category and the ship also won best food.

The Independence of the Seas was first for activities and families, while Transocean Tours’ Marco Polo was awarded best excursions. Italian cruise lines Costa and MSC finished bottom overall.
