The airspeed systems have mysteriously failed on several flights within the United States. New discoveries about the failures suggest that there could be a substantial bug in the systems of many planes.
The problem occurred on at least a dozen different flights by American jetliners. The equipment malfunction made it so pilots could not tell how fast they were flying. This can be extremely dangerous. This is the same kind of malfunction that is believed to have caused the recent Air France crash that killed 228 people.
The findings of investigators suggest that the problems causing this malfunction could be widespread. There is now a sense of urgency for airlines who are replacing old air sensors and trying to detect exactly how the initial problems took place so that they can prevent similar problems in the future.
The failures effected Airbus planes, model A330. Most of the problems reported in the US were from Northwest Airlines. The failures were reported by people who had to speak privately, because the Airline did not allow its employees to comment publicly on what could be a PR nightmare for the airline. Investigators also have to be careful what they say publicly for fear of being sued if comments negatively affect the airline un-necessarily.
