It seems like the battle between Oneworld Alliance and SkyTeam has finally reached a boiling point over Japan Airlines. This news comes as Delta Airlines, a member of SkyTeam, has now offered the struggling Japan Airlines a $1 billion incentive to leave the Oneworld Alliance and come over to SkyTeam.

Just two days ago, Japan Airlines showed a $1.5 billion first half loss and has approached the government about another bail out. This will be the carrier’s fourth bail out since 2001. Delta is very keen on the idea of securing a Japanese airline to join SkytTeam as part of its plans to expand routes from the United States to Japan.

As or right now Delta Air Lines does not have any Japanese airlines at all on its team, and thus, Japan Airlines would be a perfect fit. As far as far east carriers go, China Southern and Korean Air are already on board with SkyTeam.

The overall SkyTeam offer does include a proposal for the airline to buy $500 million Japan Airlines shares and $300 million of guarantees to cover any kind of short term loss in sales that would be caused by leaving the Oneworld alliance. Delta Air Lines will also include a $200 million in asset backed financing and a further $20 million to cover Japan Airlines’ costs for switching alliances.

As of now, Japan Airlines has refused to comment on the offer at hand. However, it is hard to see Japan Airlines, which is an airline that is struggling right now, to turn down such a big offer.
