A new £25 billion scheme for Edinburgh Airport has been proposed. This new project sets to make Edinburgh Airport the new rail, road, and air hub in Scotland. The new project that has been put forward by Reform Scotland says that the new hub could be called Grand Central.
In this new hub, it would include a high speed rail link from the airport to all of the major Scottish cities. This would make journeys from the airport to places like Sterling, Glasgow, and Edinburgh possible in only 20 minutes time. However, the time it takes to reach places like Perth, Aberdeen, and Dundee would be radically reduced as well.
A report that came out says that this project would give Scotland one of the most integrated transport systems of the next generation. However, the cost of the plan is high and very daunting. Others are quick to point out that the plan itself could be broken down into separate projects, making the start up cost less.
The plan is to start construction about the time the economy is picking back up. Thus, right now is the perfect time to just plan the layout of this new hub. Of course, many say that a proper long term integrated transport system like this is very vital for the success of Scotland’s economy. Some experts say that it would be able to compete with the best in the world.
Right now, the current system in Scotland is a series of local projects. Thus, this gives all of Scotland a very disjointed feel, and thus, the system fails.
