Speaking at the climate summit in Copenhagen, London Mayor Boris Johnson made the assertion that by the year 2015 not a single Londoner would be further than one mile away from an electric car charge point.

Mayor Johnson went on to reveal details of a citywide network of charge points for electric vehicles as London strives to be a world-leader in zero carbon-emission vehicles of the electric kind. Johnson had been using the summit to showcase London’s electric vehicle plans and his desire to make such vehicles a notable feature of the city. London is at the forefront of a global coalition committed to the scheme, with collective buying power aiding procurement.

Johnson has said in the past that he wants to make London Europe’s electric capital. His vision includes 22,500 electric car charge points over the next 5 years including all major car parks and most notable streets. The remainder of the charging stations will most likely be distributed at key road landmarks and service stations.

Johnson said that climate change is the biggest challenge facing the world today and that his leadership would undertake steps that are radical but practical. Electric cars are a perfect illustration of how cities can promote eco-friendly technology that saves money and the planet.

As of 2010, all electric drivers will be able to utilise a simple one stop website for membership and registration in a joint move with Transport for London. This will allow drivers to have register once for the capacity to charge their vehicles in every London borough, while at the same time providing easier payment options.
