Reports now show that Sadiq Khan recently visited Farringdon station to check up on Network Rail’s progress on their £250 million scheme. The main plan is to transform the hub in Farringdon into one of the largest and busiest transport hubs in all of London.

While there, the transport minister was shown demolition work at Cardinal Tower, which is being taken down to make way for an integrated Crossrail and Thameslink ticket hall. The transport minister said that Farringdon sits at the heart of a major investment in London’s railway network. From this one hub, travelers will be able to traverse the city on brand new Crossrail and Thameslink trains. They will have access to some of the country’s major international gateways.

Sadiq Khan said that he was very pleased to see that work is well underway. This upgrade is set to translate the government’s multi-billion pound investment into better services for people traveling through London and the wider UK.

The work is set to finally be completed in 2017. At that point Farringdon will be able to handle over 140 trains every single hour and offer connections to four of London’s major airports and two international rail stations.

The Network Rail Program Manager, Richard Walker, said that their investment in Farringdon will transform the station into one of London’s most important transport hubs. This will be the only station from which passengers will be able to access Crossrail, Thameslink and London underground services. During the next three months, Cardinal Tower will be carefully taken down to minimize disruption to local residents and businesses.
