Flight attendants of Air Canada are in protest of the airline’s plans to dramatically cut back jobs in a few cities. Just recently, the airline announced that 2,000 jobs will be cut, and Halifax’s and Winnipeg’s flight attendant bases will be closed. Fight attendants of more than 100 held a rally and demonstration right outside of Halifax-Robert Stanfield Airport, attempting to persuade Air Canada to take another look at their decision to close the operations base of in-flights, which has been operating for more than 30 years in the city. The attendants’ argument is that the decision to shutdown the hub would be a mistake, since it is the only one in the provinces of Maritime. Plus, Halifax continues to be the most significant hub in this region for air travel.

Labor unions as well have pointed out that the latest cutback by Air Canada might actually cause more flight cancellations and delays, which will blemish the image of the airline among the passengers who are already frustrated by Air Canada’s cut off of complimentary services. The logic of the union is that if Halifax doesn’t have an in-flight base anymore, the airline will have to fly staff in from other cities, and this could probably lead to problems logistically. Lisa Vivian Anthony, a representative for the Canadian Union of Public Employees, said that flying workers in from Toronto and Montreal promises to create problems, especially in cases of the region’s poor conditions of weather, which occur mainly during the winter.
