An extra flight has been laid on by the Foreign Office for Britons wishing to get out of Cairo as anti-government protests continue to rage across the country. It is due to take-off sometime this afternoon. More than 200 have said they are keen to pay the £300 price tag for a flight back to the UK.
The Foreign Office said it would continue to monitor the situation in Egypt and may send further aircraft to Cairo if the situation deteriorates further. The government said it had decided to charge passengers to get home because the additional flight was not meant to undercut the commercial carriers.
Those who already have tickets with other airlines were advised that they should not cancel as the country’s airspace remains open and commercial airlines are still flying in and out. Since last weekend, the FCO has been advising those intending to travel to Cairo, Luxor, Suez and Alexandria that it might not be a good idea.
Brits already in Egypt are being told to observe the overnight curfew being imposed by the authorities. Although President Hosni Mubarak has said he will stand down at the elections scheduled for September, opponents of his 30-year regime are calling for him to quit immediately.
Prime Minister David Cameron has condemned the violence adding that it would be unacceptable to learn that any of the protests were being sponsored by the current regime. He called for the rapid implementation of political reform and more rights for the Egyptian people.
