EU officials have announced the addition of four new airlines to its safety ‘blacklist’.
Two Filipino companies, in addition to one from Honduras and one from the Congos are now barred from flying to any of the Union’s 27-nation bloc. This includes Aeromajestic and Interisland Airlines from the Philippines in addition to Equatorial Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo carrier Stellar Airways. The three airlines made the list due to failing to provide evidence of complying with international safety regulations.
Similarly, officials from the European Commission said that Honduran airline Rollins Air would also be blacklisted after French authorities questioned the safety practices of the small company.
European officials also announced on Tuesday that Jordan Aviation would be banned from flying three of its Boeing 767 wide body jets into EU airspace.
Siim Kallas, the EU transport commissioner, said that the European Union could not afford any compromises in the area of aviation safety and that safety would come first. He said when wherever there was evidence that airlines were not safe in their operations that the Commission must act to exclude safety risks.
Meanwhile, three Russian carriers – Yakutia, Tatarstan Airlines and VIM AVIA – avoided the blacklist following a move by Russian authorities to impose local restrictions on all three firms.
