Australian hotel staff have said they’re tired of cleaning hotel rooms covered in chocolates, fruits and other Valentine’s Day items.

One room attendant at a Melbourne Hilton said that for hotel staff, Valentine’s Day always amounted to split champagne, flower petals scattered about, a number of ‘questionable’ stains on bed sheets and no extra time for workers to clean.

She added that they commonly see chocolates and exotic fruits smashed into the ground, bubble bath all over the toilets and massage oils on the bed sheets. She said not to even ask her about whipped cream.

In response, members of the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union have planned to protest at Melbourne’s Hilton South Wharf Hotel. Outside the property, staff members will be giving out cleaning supplies and asking people to lend a helping hand. According to the union, workers often only get about 15 minutes to clean a single room, however it very often takes more than 45 minutes complete, particularly around Valentine’s Day.

The hotel’s manager, Michael Bourne, responded by saying he’d be happy to sit down with staff and union officials. He added that in general the hotel isn’t a lovebird spot, but was primarily comprised of guests attending conventions, so Valentine’s Day shouldn’t be all that taxing.
