Iceland’s flag carrier has seen dramatic increase in tourism over the years. Thanks to the country’s economic status, many travellers, including Britons, are becoming more interested in the Scandinavian country.
UK travellers head to Iceland because of the pound’s favourable currency exchange rate. According to Lonely Planet, a population travel guide book, Iceland is the world’s best value destination for 2010.
Birkir Holm Gudnason, CEO of Icelandair, said that the country is a great place to visit because holidaymakers can get more from there money. Meanwhile, Hjorvar Saeberg Hognason, Icelandair General Manager, informed that comparing to the pound travellers had exchanged in February 2008 to the same month this year, there was an obvious increase of about 57 per cent on the money’s market exchange value. He added that UK visitors are drawn into the country not only because of its breathtaking nature and northern lights, but also due to the pound’s favourable exchange rate.
Whale watching season in Iceland is just around the corner. Hognason said that they are expecting more visitors from the UK to go to Iceland during that period, which is also the best time for bird watching.
The national airline is one of Iceland’s longest running and most established companies, serving air travellers for more than 70 years. Recently, Icelandair added three percent on top of its current flight schedules, which was already 10 per cent up from last year alone. Icelandair’s recent move was due to the rising number of travellers flying to the country.
