Hotel giant InterContinental will be doubling its number of properties in Thailand over the next five years.

The company’s announcement this week revealed an additional 11 IHG hotel properties in the works for the Southeast Asian nation; the scheme will make Bangkok the region’s first city to offer each of the company’s array of brand names and the second of such cities in Asia after the opening of several new properties in Shanghai last year.

The new set of projects includes four Holiday Inn Express properties, a Crowne Plaza, two Hotel Indigos, two Holiday Inns and a pair of InterContinental brand name hotels. The company’s chief executive for Asia and Australia, Jan Smits said that all the new projects would combine to bring more 2,000 additional IHG rooms to one of the world’s most popular travel destinations.

The news follows the 2010 launch of the Crowne Plaza Bangkok Lumpini Park, the first Crowne Plaza property in Thailand, as well as a re-launch of the company’s well-established Bangkok Holiday Inn property earlier this year. The first of the new properties will be a Holiday Inn Express brand hotel and will be situated on Wireless road, a heavily travelled district for diplomatic visitors and tourists alike.

The company said its operations in Thailand have held strong occupancy rates since its launch in the country, averaging around 70%.
