An ambush on the InterContinental Hotel in the Afghan capital has left at least seven people dead.
According to officials, several gunmen and three suicide bombers stormed the hotel property late last night, killing at least seven people, all of whom were Afghans. Three of the attackers had killed themselves with suicide bombs and the four were shot after troops entered the building on the roof via helicopter.
The head of police in Kabul said to reporters early this morning that the building had been secured by both NATO and Afghan forces and that all of the guests in the hotel were now safe. The InterContinental Hotel is frequented by Westerners and is one of the city’s most famous properties.
Siddiq Siddiqi, the Afghan interior spokesman, said to the AFP that in addition to the seven people killed (not including insurgents), that an additional eight people were injured and there could be further casualties.
Meanwhile, Zabiullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Taliban, said the organisation was behind the ambush. Officials said the group likely coordinated the attack with a conference between Afghan provincial governors at the hotel as well as a meeting scheduled on Wednesday between NATO-led ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) and Afghan officials to discuss the transition of security responsibilities.
