Talks have come forward that show that Japan Airlines has temporarily put talks between itself and American Airlines and Delta Air Lines on hold. This temporary hold will last until the Japanese Government task force finishes its review on the airlines financial structure.

Japan Airlines, which just so happens to be Asia’s largest airline in terms of revenue, is currently fighting for survival. This fight started after the Japanese government refused the airline’s plea for help in the form of helping it reduce its $15 billion debt pile. Instead of helping, the government said that the turnaround plan for the airline was insufficient. Any kind of bailout now would be subject to the launch of the task force review.

However, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines have been in talks with Japan Airlines to invest money in the struggling carrier. Both of the airlines look to use the investment as a way to gain a stronger foothold in Japan and the rest of Asia as a whole. Delta has already offered the airline 30 billion yen.

American Airlines has teamed up with Qantas Airways and British Airways to keep Japan Airlines in the Oneworld Alliance grouping of airlines. They went on to point out that executives from all three of the carriers came together to meet with Japan Airlines just last September.

During all of this, Delta Air Lines has been trying to get Japan Airlines to join the rival team SkyTeam alliance. Fellow SkyTeam member, Air France, is a potential partner with Delta Air Lines to invest in Japan Airlines.
