Low cost airliners easyJet and Jet2 made public their new plans to increase flights services in Paphos this summer season.

Starting 14 April, easyJet will inaugurate its latest flights servicing Bristol to Paphos with four flights a week, and Edinburgh to Paphos with two flights per week. Currently, easyJet has several flights from Paphos, but they fly to Stansted, Gatwick and Manchester. Meanwhile, Jet2’s Paphos flights will commence by May, with a once per week service from the Cypriot city to Newcastle and East Midlands.

The new summer flights were announced in London by Alecos Orountiotis, Chairman of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO). Orountiotis had earlier held talks with UK tour operators and airlines to help boost tourism in the island. Citing Cyprus as a leading tourist destination, CTO pledged to continuously promote tourism in the country. Orountiotis said that Cyprus is not an inexpensive destination, but with the help of CTO and other tourism agencies, they are enhancing the services that they offer to tourists.

Meanwhile, hotel owners are concerned that high tourist arrival this year is still not guaranteed, as the tourism industry is still recovering. Hoteliers are still worried about the status of local tourism, despite good signs in earlier weeks when hotel reservations went higher compared to the same period of last year. However this year, Jet2 anticipates to fly to Cyprus at least 82,400 passengers as compared to 37,000 last 2009, while easyJet sets 2010’s estimates to 225,000 passengers from 155,000 a year ago.
