During the fall, Oscar Dios, a rich, Swedish entrepreneur, saw an old B747 jumbo jet sitting at the Arlanda Airport in Stockholm, and decided to buy it, refurbish it, and turn it into a hostel. The new Jumbo Hostel offers accommodations for 85 people and is located at the front of the airport.
Dios said that he obtained information about the jumbo jet and thought that it could be turned into a hostel. He said that he figured that boats, trains, and light houses have been turned into hostels; why not a plane?
Crews for the construction worked through the holiday in order to get the Jumbo Hostel’s 25 rooms ready for a January 15th opening, as the hostel has already been taking bookings. The rooms are 65 square feet and Spartanly furnished. They have bunk beds, overhead compartments for luggage, and flat screen televisions with flight information and entertainment.
All of the floor space in the aircraft, which is 3,800 square feet, is being used. The Jumbo Hostel has a small cafeteria and reception area right at the front entrance, 2 rows of rooms on all sides of the aisle, as well as toilets and showers in the back. Also, the bubble on the top is being turned into a conference room that will have first-class seats.
Dios hopes that he will see a diverse clientèle, which includes airport taxi drivers who can stop in for a cup of coffee in the cafeteria, those travelers who need accommodations that are close to the airport, as well as wedding parties who want an unusual place for a ceremony.
