A new report has said that a new taxi rank being considered to be built at Leeds Bradford Airport could cost as much as £1 million.

Officials from Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBIA) say that the new proposed facility on Whitehouse Lane is needed in order to improve quickly worsening traffic problems around the airport.

However a recent report sent to the Leeds City Council this week said it wouldn’t be the ‘ideal’ way to deal with traffic problems around the facility because a significant amount of engineering issues would lead to substantially expensive costs.

The news comes nearly six months after the airport put its drop-off fee into affect, which according to the report has led to motorists making U turns and illegally parking in the areas around the airport to sidestep the £2 charge, which subsequently creates major congestion problems.

The report said that the minimum cost of building the proposed taxi rank would be £515,000, although this figure could easily go up by £325,000 because public utilities would have to be diverted. It added that landscaping, customer waiting areas and other additional costs were likely to total to some £65,000.

Airport officials declined commenting on the report.
