It now seems that Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has come forward and gave her two cents about the government’s decision to increase the Air Passenger Duty tax. She noted that this will have a negative impact on the Caribbean economy and will do very little for the environment as well. Overall, she pointed out that the tax as a whole just does not add up.

Reports go on to suggest that the Caribbean nations are very dependent on tourists from Britain. This is because thousands of Brits like to make their way to the islands in the Caribbean every year for a little getaway. However, the government has now placed an increase in tax on all passengers leaving the UK. This now could bring the love affairs between the Caribbeans and Brits to an end.

Some experts say that this new tax, which is being called a green tax by some, could discourage people from flying and therefore help the environment. Some say that the overall details of the tax, however, just does not fit the bill as a green tax.

Ministers from all over the Caribbean, many of whom actually came to the House of Commons just last week. Have pointed out that it is crazy to charge passengers more to go to the Caribbean than it does to travel to the west coast of America. They go on to point out that if this tax is about protecting the environment, then the tax should be based on the distance traveled, rather than being broken up into zones. They pointed out that it seems that the government could be more interested in protecting its relationship with American businesses than it is about really saving the environment.
