Ministers are going to say that a third runway is a necessity at the London Heathrow Airport in a Commons debate. Geoff Hoon, Transport Secretary, is probably going to approve the project before the year ends. This will be the first time that he faces the anger of the Labour and Conservative opponents of the proposed third runway.
Mr. Hoon is anticipated to say that the Conservatives are being too anti-business and argue that the long-term growth of demand in the aviation industry means that the government needs to press on with a third runway. He is also expected to say that any downturn in the economy shouldn’t take away from the vision that was set in white paper 5 years ago.
John Grogan, the Labour MP for Shelby, put forward the motion on the London Heathrow Airport and said that the opposition’s political forces on the new runway have united and are more visible now in side and outside of the government.
However, Conservatives have claimed that consulting for the need of another runway at the airport is a sham. Theresa Villiers, a shadow spokesman, spoke at the Commons debate, saying that the government has already made up their mind to get the project underway. However, Mr. Hoon said that the decision is subject to taking full consideration of environmental factors.
British Airports Authority, an airport owner, and British Airways, their main customer, say that a third runway is necessary if the London Heathrow Airport is going to stay competitive.
