Lufthansa is Europe’s second biggest airline. It recently had to offer concessions to the EU regulators to avoid problems with anti-trust laws, due to its plans to purchase Austrian Airlines. However, this week Lufthansa has revised is proposed concessions in a controversial move.

The European Commission will discuss the issue with other European Airlines to see if selling takeoff and landing slots will address concerns by competitors regarding fairness in the marketplace.

Late last year Lufthansa offered to buy the Vienna Based Austrian Airlines as part of industry consolidation prompted by the recession. They need approval from the EU antitrust commission. They have recently asked for an extension until August 31 to get this approval.

The concessions may involve cutting back service on significant routes such as Vienna-Munich or Vienna Frankfurt. Analyst, Per-Ola Hellgren said by phone “They may be betting that they won’t have much competition anyway, given the battered state of the industry.”

Austrian Airlines stock sky rocketed after news of the purchase by Lufthansa, now shareholders and Lufthansa executive are hoping that they can get through the anti-trust commission without having to make concessions that would make the deal cease to be profitable.
