Lufthansa’s deputy and CEO, Christoph Franz, has just recently revealed that Lufthansa will overhaul its European economy class product next year in a bid to cut costs. The main development is that passengers will see their seat pitch reduced. This will be done so that the German national carrier can put more passengers on every flight, thus being able to reduce ticket prices.

Many airline experts point out that Lufthansa is being forced to make these changes to fit more passengers on planes in order to keep ticket prices low. Right now most airlines are losing a lot of money, because their ticket prices are so low. If the airlines could fit more people on each plane, then they may be able to turn a profit, even with cheap tickets.

Since Lufthansa is a quality carrier and not a low budget carrier like Easyjet and Ryanair, the airline cannot profitably offer low cost fares. As or right now, the main plans are still not known. For example, experts are not sure if these changes will just affect Lufthansa’s mainline European fleet, which is comprised of a mixture of planes like Airbus A320s and B737s, or if its going to include specialized commuter fleets as well.

As soon as Lufthansa announced this, some rumors got started that the airline was becoming a budget airline. However, Lufthansa has denied these reports. In a statement that the carrier released, they noted that they will remain a quality carrier. Right now they are simply looking for more ways that they can offer up cost controls without hurting their service.
