Two of the world’s top hotel brands, Hilton and Marriott, have begun seeking permission to hire more legal immigrant workers for properties in the sluggish US market.

The news comes from a Bloomberg News report focusing on immigration and campaign contribution patters in the US.

The news organization says that lobbyists for the hotel giants are pushing to up the number of work visas and permanent resident cards, aka green cards, which can allow legal immigrants to work in the United States for a lifetime if desired.

Lobbyists say they’re also pushing for a streamlined system for employers to be able to check up on the status of immigrant workers.

Jonas Neihardt is a lobbyist for McLean, a parent company of numerous international hotel chains. He says that in anticipation of the improvement of the economy, hotels are going to have the need for more immigrant workers.

In the effort of pushing for the measures, hotel giants have made massive campaign contributions to politicians.

According to the US Center for Responsible Politics, Chief executive of Marriott International, J.W. Marriott Jr., has given over $50,000 USD to Republican campaigns and nearly $10,000 USD to Democratic campaigns this year alone.

Thomas Marder, a spokesman for Marriott, says the donations are based on a number of factors in addition to immigration.
