Controversial plans to build a new airport somewhere on the Thames Estuary would be complicated but ultimately possible according to an initial report.

A second study into the proposal has now been initiated by Boris Johnson. If given the go ahead the south east could get a new six runway airport in the estuary with high speed rail links joining it to the mainland. Thames Estuary Research and Development Company spokesperson, Bridget Rosewell says that although she is not yet announcing that a new airport would necessarily be a good thing for the area she is determined to look closely at all aspects such as its effects on the local infrastructure and economy so that an informed decision can eventually be arrived at.

Environmental groups have warned that the building of a new airport would be devastating for the wildlife that inhabits the Kent and Essex coast. Andre Farrar who was speaking on behalf of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said that it would not only be disastrous for native British birds but for birds from around the world who utilize the area. He said that a six runway airport would destroy the sands and mud flats on which around half a million birds rely annually.

Medway councilor, Rodney Chambers is also opposed to the scheme and said that Medway Council had already managed to prevent a similar proposal in Kent. He said that a study had shown that most airlines did not want to be so far out of London. He pointed out that the Thames Estuary airport would be further away still.
