Drivers aren’t the only ones feeling the crunch when it comes to high fuel prices. Imagine having to foot the bill for fueling up a plane or a whole fleet. In an effort to cut down on weight and get better fuel mileage many airlines are cutting some of the luxuries. While some companies are removing in flight meals or charging passengers for blankets and pillows, Air Canada Jazz is removing something that might save your life in the event of a crash: life vests.
In coming months the carrier will remove all life vests from their Dash – 8 planes in an effort to cut down on fuel costs. Currently these planes carry approximately 50 life vests each weighing in at just over one. While the airline claims that even the smallest weight reduction will help cut down on fuel costs opponents are worried that airlines are no longer concerned with keeping customers happy, just reducing their costs.
According to a recent report Transport Canada, the official authority for all carriers operating in Canada, declared that as along as a flight stays within 50 nautical miles of the Canadian shoreline they do not need to carry life vests. Since Air Canada Jazz does not offer any out of country flights they can remove the life vests from their planes without violating and rules. Those traveling on the Air Canada Jazz flights will still have seats that work as a flotation device in the event of a water landing.
