Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced yesterday that wreckage has been recovered from the crash and there are no survivors.

There were 13 passengers and crew in the wrecked plane discovered by rescuers and sadly none had survived.

The Twin Otter 300 plane went down over the mountains on a flight from Port Moresby to Kokoda and there has widely been speculation about reasons why and whether anyone could have survived. Investigators are now on the ground trying to find what brought the little plane down. There have been ongoing safety concerns with this airline.

The 11 passengers and 2 crew included nine Australian citizens, three Paupans and one Japanese. The story has been particularly prevalent in Australia as they have waited for news about their citizens lost in the dense rain forest.

Aviation is often considered to be more dangerous in Papua where mountains are rugged and high and weather can often change quickly.

The destination of Kokoda is very popular with Australians who played a pivotal role here during world war two. There are memorial sites there and tourists can walk the Kokoda track. Now, some may think twice about making the flight.
