With many British tourists staying home this year, trips using company or hire cars are increasing. One of the biggest challenges families or groups face in their driving holiday is what gets played on the stereo.
A new survey for GM UK Fleet has found which music is best for keeping the peace, which tunes are the driving nations favourites along with some which are definitely out of favour.
Worryingly, the UK’s favourite driving song was ‘Bat out of Hell’ by Meatloaf. Queen, the nations preferred artist, came second with Bohemian Rhapsody. Traditional MOR artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Roy Orbison and Chris Rea all made the top 10, with only Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’ from new artists.
‘Agadoo’ by Black Lace was far and awy the worst song to listen to in the car, or anywhere, followed by the ‘Birdy Song’ and ‘Eye of the Tiger’. Celine Dion and Aqua were also out of favour.
The survey shows just how much time might be suffered listening to bad music, with well over half of all those polled advising they would be driving to their holiday destination. The over 55’s are the group most likely to drive and also drive the furthest, as 56% advised they would be driving for more than 10 hours. The younger the age group, the less time spent in the vehicle, and less patience. The 18 -34 age group were unlikely to spend more than 4 or 5 hours behind the wheel.
Perhaps the biggest saviour is USB port stereos, enabling MP3 and iPod users to share their musical tastes with their fellow passengers.
