A woman has now been accused for traveling twice from the Midland to Surrey in order to burn down two different hotels. The woman, Rebecca O’Loughlin, age 33, of Stonehouse Lane, Birmingham was jailed just a year and a half earlier over the fires that happened at Oak Lodge B&B.
The Guildford Corwn Court said that the woman had tried to start another fire while still under a suspended prison sentence for the first arson attempt and, thus, has not learned anything from her time in jail. Rebecca had originally appeared before the court last September having tried to set fire to her room at Oak Lodge, Burgh Heath Road, in November of 2007. The owner of the hotel found a smoldering bathmat and a pile of papers containing a lit cigarette in the bathroom.
For this attempt she was given eight months in jail and suspended for two years. The judge at the time said that he was satisfied that the woman had learned her lesson. However, Rebecca did not and tried to commit her second arson attempt on March 9 of this year at a Premier Inn.
The prosecuting lawyer, Laura Plant, told the court that the defendant had tired to start a fire, which could have been lethal. Rebecca pleaded guilty again to arson and being reckless as to whether life was in danger. She also pleaded guilty to another charge of criminal damage.
The defending lawyer, Philop Longes, said that unfortunately for her, she will not be offered the same psychiatric help she so obviously needed after the first offense.
