New reports now show that Manchester Airport is currently in talks with other airlines about the possibility of taking over routes that will be cut by Ryanair. A spokesman for the airport has already said that they are very confident in replacing the abandoned routes by Ryanair fairly quickly.

This new announcement comes after the Irish airline said it looked to close 9 of its 10 routes from Manchester Airport starting in October. The low budget carrier went on to blaim the high airport charges as the reason for the closing of the routes. Ryanair went on to say that many airlines are cutting costs to get people to travel, yet many airports refuse to cut back on fees. This is an accusation that the Manchester Airport has disputed.

Five of the routes not being offered by Ryanair anymore are currently being offered by other rival airlines. This leaves only four routes unaccounted for. Of course, the low cost regional airline Jet2 has just announced that it will be starting new services from Manchester to Venice, Gran Carnaria, and Kos. It also announced that it will be increasing the frequency of its services to Dalman, Sharm el Sheikh, Lanzarote, and Tel Aviv next year.

Manchester Airport went on to say that it would be very shocked if the four routes not offered by Manchester right now remained open for very long. Many airlines including Jet2, bmibaby and easyJet have all be adding new services and more capacity in the last 12 months.

The managing director of Manchester Airport, Andrew Cornish, said: “The fact that Jet2.com is continuing to expand its services from Manchester is extremely encouraging to the airport and the region as a whole.”
