Experts from a UK road safety charity are warning drivers of the dangers of sun glare amidst new crash figures.
Upon analysis of recent government figures regarding automobile crashes, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is warning motorists to be wary of sun glare, which is a leading cause of accidents.
The group points out that in 2009, there were 2,684 crashing resulting in injuries as a result of sun glare, which to the surprise of many is equal to the amount caused by hazardous weather and headlight dazzle combined.
The warning comes in anticipation of Sunday’s time change, when driver will have to face sun glare head-on, both during morning and evening commutes.
Director of policy and research at IAM, Neil Greig, said that although motorists typically can’t change the need to travel during certain hours and can’t change the position of the sun, there are things they can do to reduce risks.
Mr Greig went on to point out that among the most important safety precautions is to keep your auto’s windscreen clean, which can become particularly dirty when the heater is on de-mist.
Greig also pointed out that like sun glare, motorists need to be weary of headlight dazzle. He said that by initially looking away from headlights, to the left side of the road, drivers could avoid dazzle.
