A recent report has revealed that Scotland bears the UK worst roadways in terms of potholes, blocked drains and repairs.
The news comes from a recent report by the Automobile Association, for which research was conducted ahead of the Big Freeze. It found that Scotland faces a massive problem in road funding amid the worst road conditions anywhere in the United Kingdom.
The report utilised a ‘traffic light’ rating system, which rated entities with the fewest faults via a green light, whilst those with the most were dealt a red light. Researchers looked at a wide variety of road-related problems, both on the road itself and just adjacent to it, such as dog mess and litter.
The report, dubbed Streetwatch, was conducted by around 1,900 AA members, who found that Scotland by far had the highest amount of potholes measuring at least the size of a saucer. More than half of those taking part in the survey found that potholes were the biggest problem they encountered.
The news comes as Scottish councils are already facing a major struggle, after they were given only £15 million in additional funding for Big Freeze-related issues despite previously estimating they would need £120 million in addition to normal budgets to properly address current problems.
AA President Edmund King said that the problem would only worsen as the winter continues. He said that the findings would be shared with highway and police authorities in the effort of repairs.
