Singapore Airlines has become the latest carrier to raise fuel surcharges.

SIA’s move comes after both Air New Zealand and Qantas raised hiked fuel surcharges for passengers earlier in the week. The rise in fees for passengers of the Changi-based carrier will go into effect for all bookings beginning on the 17th of March.

SIA business travellers will soon be paying US $220 return flights to Australia and New Zealand and as much as a hefty US $316 for European connections from Singapore. Economy class passengers will pay US $192 for return flights to Australia and US $284 for flights to the UK or mainland Europe.

First Class and Suite fares will see the largest increase, adding up to as much as US $516 for return flights between Singapore and the Americas. All other flights, including those wholly within the Asian region, will see surcharges of US $96 for each ticketed sector in economy class, $110 in Business Class and $124 for Suites and First Class tickets.

The news comes as oil prices continue to skyrocket amid continued unrest in Libya and around the Middle East. The price of crude surpassed US $130 in recent weeks and few signs of relief are on the horizon.
