Singapore Airlines has entered a new partnership with Spain’s tourism board. The new deal will see both entities push promotional initiatives in the effort of increasing international tourism to the western European nation via SIA’s route between its base at Changi Airport in Singapore and Barcelona.

The effort will include joint investment into new advertising campaigns, which will promote not only Spain as a tourist destination, but also the newly expanded seven weekly flights to Barcelona via Singapore’s national carrier. The route had previously only operated three days per week and had used a smaller and less fuel-efficient aircraft model.

SIA passengers can also take advantage of codeshare service via Spanair, which offers domestic flights from Barcelona to Madrid, Bilbao and the Canary Islands’ Palma de Mallorca. Additionally, the Barcelona flight continues onward to Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Angela Castano, director of the Spanish tourism board, said that the agreement offered a great deal of potential for the local industry. She said that local businesses hoped that the effort would bring a larger portion of Asia’s increasing number of international tourists to Spain.

Meanwhile, Tan Chik Quee, SIA’s senior VP of marketing, said the agreement and the expansion of service marked his airline’s growing confidence in Spain as an important route, both in terms of tourism and as an attractive business destination.
