A number of guests and members of staff at the William Street Hilton Hotel in Glasgow have been suffering the effects of a suspected norovirus outbreak according to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Two guests have been admitted to Gartnaval General Hospital but doctors say there is no reason why they should not make a full recovery.

A spokesperson for Hilton Worldwide has confirmed that staff at Hilton Glasgow are following the hotels strict procedures in response to the suspected outbreak as well as working closely with the local health authorities. The NHSGGC has started its own enquiries into the outbreak and how it occurred at the luxury hotel.

In order to contain the norovirus, seven gusts at the hotel were confined to their rooms. Another 15, who were also suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea, have been allowed to leave. Last night, an outbreak control team met to discuss the situation.

Headed by Dr Anne Scoular, a public health consultant with the NHSGGC, the team concluded that from the symptoms of the staff and guests the most likely cause of the illness was the norovirus. Dr Scoular said that she and her team would continue to monitor the situation closely and confirm what caused the outbreak.

She went on to say that staff at the Hilton Hotel had done everything possible to prevent the further spread of the virus. Measures have been put in place for a thorough cleaning of the hotel. The hotel remains open, although the swimming pool is out of use whilst it undergoes sanitisation.
