The closure of Skyservice Airlines last week has paved the way for a joint venture between travel operator Thomas Cook and Jazz Air, the regional partner of Air Canada.
Announced yesterday, the partnership is beneficial for Jazz in two reasons. Not only will the deal allow the airline expand its operations, but it will also let Jazz fly a fleet of no less than six Boeing 757-200 jets. The plane, which has a seating capacity of up to 228 passengers, is substantially bigger than the jets and turboprops Jazz now operates.

Two of Canada’s top airlines are lowering their fees and surcharges to keep pace with the recent decrease in jet fuel prices. Air Canada will be eliminating their second bag fee of 25 dollars for North American flights and, along with WestJet, will be working its fuel surcharges into its advertised ticket prices. Port Airlines, a smaller carrier, has also announced its intentions to eliminate their fuel surcharge as a separate fee. Drivers aren’t the only ones feeling the crunch when it comes to high fuel prices. Imagine having to foot the bill for fueling up a plane or a whole fleet. In an effort to cut down on weight and get better fuel mileage many airlines are cutting some of the luxuries. While some companies are removing in flight meals or charging passengers for blankets and pillows, Air Canada Jazz is removing something that might save your life in the event of a crash: life vests.

Air Canada is wanting their passengers to either upgrade to using an audio headset for 3 dollars or use their own, hoping that they can cut down on handing out the flimsy, free headphones, of which are usually thrown away after they have only been used during one flight. As the largest carrier for the country, Air Canada will begin offering their passengers who are seated in the economy class on flights within North America the choice of using the free headset or paying a fee for a headset of higher-quality, which will start on October 1st.

Flight attendants of Air Canada are in protest of the airline’s plans to dramatically cut back jobs in a few cities. Just recently, the airline announced that 2,000 jobs will be cut, and Halifax’s and Winnipeg’s flight attendant bases will be closed. Fight attendants of more than 100 held a rally and demonstration right outside of Halifax-Robert Stanfield Airport, attempting to persuade Air Canada to take another look at their decision to close the operations base of in-flights, which has been operating for more than 30 years in the city. Air Canada is saying that their load factor for combined services for the month of June has increased from 82.2% up to 82.8%. They also say that have increased their capacity for both Air Canada and their Jazz services combined by 2.7%. Their main carrier transported an increased amount of revenue passenger miles by 2.8% last month, compared to June of last year. They also increased their capacity by 3.3% which led their load factor to be 83%, compared to 83.4% last year, which is a 0.3% decrease.
